    Deism was a common belief; deists believed that the world was like a clock, God winds it and it works on its own. Deists did not like monarchy because they did not believe in divine right, puritans did not believe in the monarchy because it was created by Anglicans and Catholics. Puritans believed that people were predestined to go either to heaven or hell. Deists believed that whether a person goes to heaven or hell depends on the person's actions. The Anglican church or the Church of England was founded by King Henry VIII in 1531.

    Dramatic unities were strict literary rules that some countries (France for example) took from Classical Literature. During this time period, everyone believed that writers had to adhere to these rules. Structure is one of the main traits of Rationalist writing.

    The first novel was written by Samuel Richardson. It was called Pamela and was basically a collection of letters. It was so bad that a satire came out right after it that became the second novel. The novel was invented by Richardson, Defoe, Fielding and Sterne.

    Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope were the two main writers of the rationalist era. During this time period, there was not a lot of quality literature being produced. Much of the literature was satire and political allegory (a story where each person or events represents a real person or event)

    King Charles I was executed at Whitehead in 1649. After this the Puritans attempted to establish a democracy, but in 1660, King Charles II was restored to the throne. The Rationalist era began in 1660 (I think... you might want to clarify that)
