the canterbury tales is conidered an important piece of british literature?
Answer: (12/19/2009)
Yes.
And one of the main reasons is that it was one of the first major literary works in English language. Before that most literature was in Latin (it was the language of church and english was sort of junk language).
Also, Canterbury tales takes a shift from all the religious influence in the literature. It was one of the first books printed by printing press and not by church. The book would never have been printed if the monks were the publishers because he presents church as not good all the time and he also has some corrupt characters who are associated with church.
