Is There a Demand For Agile Coaches?
Companies large and small are considering implementing Agile. What is Agile? Agile is a new mindset using a number of methodologies that encourage a new way of working that embraces change and flexibility. This program encourages continuous improvement and uses feedback information to help company teams get work and projects done faster and with more efficiency.
Agile Team Facilitation is needed in the form of a qualified, effective Agile coach. There is a healthy demand for qualified, good Agile Coaches.
Agile Developmental Methodology
What is Agile Development? This is a management style that finds individuals and their interactions more important than tools and processes. Agile development started in 2001 with four values:
- Interactions with individuals are valued over tools and processes
- Working software is more important than comprehensive documentation
- Customer collaboration is valued over negotiated contracts
- Change is responded to with plans to be followed
How To Become a Good, Effective Agile Coach
It is a great start to take the courses needed to become certified. However, the training program chosen must teach the correct mindset to succeed and give the student the practice and the skills required to use them. The program should also help students learn judgment and when to use which practices and methodologies.
Choose a certification program with a good reputation and track record for its graduates. Do the instructors have up-to-date knowledge of the latest Agile practices? Does the course offer mentoring and teamwork?
It might be helpful to add additional books on Agile training to round out the training and give additional insight. It never hurts to add more expert advice and training. A person who wants to be an effective Agile coach will want to learn these things:
- How are teams and networks formed? It is important to know why the team is being formed and what the project is they will work on. This could be a product development and launch or another objective.
- Gaining team agility and technical skill. Learning and communication initiatives must be managed effectively.
- Administration skills include session preparation, note taking and bookkeeping, contract and other legal documents preparation, marketing projects, training skills, and communications.
What Does a Good Agile Coach Do?
Good Agile coaches work with a company team or individuals on that team to plan and accomplish goals. They will assess the Agile team and its effectiveness, then help improve the team’s performance. They will show the team how to effectively run meetings and ceremonies.
The Agile coach will report the team’s positive and problem areas and how to improve their performance to management. They will use Agile knowledge and the practices of assessment, planning, advising, collecting metrics, and relationship advice to help the team be more successful. Their goal is to teach the team to operate independently in the future for successful project outcomes.
