Red Mountain Writing Project
A program for Birmingham area teachers, K-16, in all subjects

The Red Mountain Writing Project, a National Writing Project site, operates in partnership with  the Colleges of Education and  Arts & Humanities at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the UAB Regional  Inservice Center, the Montevallo Regional Inservice Center, and all Birmingham area school districts.

About Us

Red Mountain Writing Project is an authorized inservice provider for No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and related programs, including:
Title I
Title V
High Objective Uniform State System of Evaluation (HOUSSE)
Highly Qualified Teachers (HQT)
Adequate Yearly  Progress (AYP)

The major features of the Red Mountain Writing Project are:

  • It is a teachers-teaching-teachers model.  If you come to a summer institute, you become a teacher consultant and may conduct writing workshops for teachers in the Birmingham area throughout the year.

  • The four week invitational institute is open to kindergarten - university teachers in all subject areas.  It features writing and responding groups, teacher demonstrations, and reading/discussion of current research and pedagogy in writing.

  • Up to 20 teachers are accepted each summer as fellows for the institute.  The selection process is based on a combination of nominations, applications, and interviews.  We welcome all Birmingham area teachers to apply.

  • Continuity programs for fellows are held throughout the year.
